Website builder without monthly fees: Wix, Squarespace, or a custom site?

“Is there a website builder without a monthly fee?” is one of the most common questions I get — and the honest answer is: not really, not for a proper business site. Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, and the rest are built around a subscription. The free tiers come with their branding, their subdomain, and hard limits; the moment you want your own domain and a professional look, you’re on a monthly plan.

So the real question isn’t “which builder is free” — it’s “should I rent a website forever, or build one once and own it?” Here’s the honest comparison.

What you’re actually paying for with a builder

A website builder’s monthly fee (typically ₹400–2,500/month in India for a business plan) buys you convenience: drag-and-drop editing, hosting, templates, and support, with no developer involved. For some people that’s exactly the right trade. But the fee is rent — stop paying and the site goes away, because you never owned it. You’re also renting:

  • Their templates — your site looks like thousands of others on the same platform.
  • Their limits — you can only do what the builder allows. Custom features hit a wall.
  • Their performance — builder sites carry heavy page weight, which can slow load times and hurt SEO.
  • Your data on their terms — exporting and migrating away is deliberately awkward.

What a one-time custom site costs instead

A custom-built website is a single payment — no subscription to me, no platform rent. From my custom website cost guide, a business website runs ₹5,000–20,000 as a one-time build. You own the code, the design, and the hosting account. Most sites I build run on free hosting tiers (Netlify), so after the build your only recurring cost is the domain — roughly ₹800–1,500/year, registered in your name.

Real examples, all live: Toondemy Preschool, Aarti Jewellers with live gold-and-silver prices, and the SikhAid NGO donation platform — each a one-time build the client owns outright.

The 3-year math

This is where the “cheaper” builder stops being cheaper:

Website builder (business plan) One-time custom site
Year 1 ₹4,800 – ₹30,000 ₹5,000 – ₹20,000 once
Year 2 another ₹4,800 – ₹30,000 ₹0
Year 3 another ₹4,800 – ₹30,000 ₹0
After 5 years ₹24,000 – ₹1,50,000 and counting still ₹0
Own it? No — stop paying, it’s gone Yes, forever
Looks unique? Template-based Built for you

Within two to three years, a custom site has usually paid for itself versus the subscription — and from then on it’s free to keep, while the builder keeps billing.

When a builder is genuinely the right call

I’d rather be honest than sell you something you don’t need. Use a website builder when:

  • You need a simple site live this week and can’t wait for a build.
  • It’s a short-term site — an event, a temporary campaign — you’ll shut down in months.
  • You want to edit everything yourself daily with zero technical help and no developer on call.
  • You’re testing an idea and don’t yet know if the business will stick.

In those cases the subscription is buying you speed and self-service, and that’s worth it.

When a custom site wins

Go custom when the website is a long-term part of your business:

  • You’ll keep it running for years — the subscription math turns against renting fast.
  • You want a site that looks like yours, not a template.
  • You need custom features a builder can’t do — live data, a specific booking flow, an integration.
  • You care about owning your code and data, with the freedom to have any developer work on it later.
  • You want the best possible SEO and speed, built lean rather than loaded with builder overhead.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a truly free website builder for a business?

Not for a professional site. Free tiers force a platform subdomain and branding and block custom domains. A usable business plan is a monthly subscription. The only way to avoid recurring fees entirely is a one-time custom build that you own.

Is a custom website cheaper than Wix or Squarespace?

Over time, usually yes. A custom business site is ₹5,000–20,000 once; a builder is that much every year or two in subscription fees, indefinitely. The break-even is typically two to three years, after which the custom site costs nothing to keep.

Can I edit a custom website myself like I can on Wix?

Yes — if that’s a requirement, I build in a simple content management system or admin panel so you can update text and images yourself. It’s one of the things that affects the quote, and we agree on it upfront.

What happens to my Wix/Squarespace site if I stop paying?

It goes offline. You’re renting, so the site and often your data disappear when the subscription ends. With a custom build you own everything, so it keeps running regardless.
